Pulled up an account at work today, and the accountholder's name is one of those that got me thinking that her parents must have hated her from conception to have saddled her with such a name for her entire life. Then again, maybe Mr. & Mrs. Mass are a perfectly normal Catholic family who think it's likewise perfectly normal to name their child Mary-Chris. Yeah, this person's name is Mary-Chris Mass! Can't make this stuff up.

Mirror, Mirror My Domain January 23, 2005 10:19 am

Found a good sale price on ordering domain names, so I went ahead and purchased the roadklahoma.com domain (yeah, as if anyone else was ever gonna use that name). It's actually just a mirror, so going to that url will only take you to where the site's always been, but hey, it's the principle of the thing. In a totally-unrelated topic, due to a special training class I have to take this week I'm actually off this weekend, my first since I started this job (not counting Toy Run weekend, but those were vacation days so they don't count). And a series of shopping incidents yesterday served as a strong reminder of why I do work on the weekend. Every place I went, it was a madhouse, much busier than it was when I did my Christmas shopping. And I did that two days before Christmas! I'll go ahead and work the weekends from here on, thank you.

The Series Trekkers Dare Not Miss! January 26, 2005 4:45 pm

For the first three years of its run, Star Trek: Enterprise really hasn't lived up to its potential. A series that takes place a century before the original series, and two centuries before its three predecessors, Enterprise had been facing a serious problem: many of the stories that would've made good episodes, couldn't be told, because it would violate continuity. As an example of the series trying to get around this, there were episodes that featured both the Ferengi and the Borg. But since the Federation didn't know what either looked like until 200 years later, both species went their entire episodes unnamed. To me, that just seemed like a cop out. This year, thanks to a new showrunner, the series has made a full 180. Not violating the continuity, but rather embracing it. Showing how the 23rd and 24th centuries got that way. So far this season, we've already seen Data's creator's great-grandfather as the head of a group of genetically-engineered humans (Khan's people), a much-younger version of the Vulcan matriarch who presided over Spock's near-wedding (as a terrorist, no less), and a valid reason as to why, when we first saw the Organians in the 23rd century, they already knew a lot about humans (they just visited Archer's Enterprise, although none of the crew remember it). And the season's only half-over: - The next storyline featureas the chronologically-earliest appearance of humans, Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites in the same episode: the four races who, some seven years hence, will found the Federation.
- We are 23 days away from learning how the Klingons lost their bumpy foreheads.
- Turns out that, without Picard and the 1701-E crew helping Zefram Cochrane and his staff launch Earth's first warp vessel and showing just what was at stake, the Vulcans that land in Montana to investigate would've instead faced a lynch mob. That's the event that separates our familiar universe from the Mirror Universe. An upcoming two-parter that takes place entirely in the Mirror Universe also features an appearance from a Constitution-class Federation vessel that we've seen before: Kirk's Enterprise's sister ship, the Defiant. (And if you think they're skimping on the Defiant sets, take a look at these behind-the-scenes shots!)
- And it's currently being reported that Riker & Troi, last seen departing the Enterprise-E for their own ship, the Titan, will be making an appearance in the season finale.
Oh, sure, these are all gimmicks to get the ratings up high enough so the series will be renewed. But, hey: you got forty years of history, might as well use it.(Something else to remember: when this current season ends, there will have been a new Star Trek series on the air continuously for 18 years. The same amount of time we went without a series [1969-87].) The picture link at the top of the page will be added to the masses of other stuff at the right until the series ends. Which hopefully woun't be for another few years. Star Trek: Enterprise airs Friday nights at 7PM CST on UPN. (And when it's over, be sure to switch over to the Sci-Fi Channel for the three other best sci-fi shows currently running, Stargate: Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, and Stargate SG-1.)

Just Shoot Me January 29, 2005 10:34 pm

A British scientist used some formula he devised to calculate that January 24th is the most depressing day of the year. Therefore, by default, this must be the most depressing week. At least, it is from where I stand:- Johnny Carson died.
- The creation of a "no-host" format on Trading Spaces means that host Paige Davis is being kicked off the show!
- Got to see the Battlestar Galactica season finale. It'll turn out to be a major disappointment if this winds up the series finale as well, because they did one of television's best cliffhangers ever.
- Was able to confirm that the reason Travis Meyer is no longer on Channel 8 and Frank Mitchell is now hyped as Chief Meteorologist is that Travis has been hired away by Channel 6, which already had more weatherpersons than any other station. He could start on-air as early as this Tuesday, and while he won't be head honcho, from what I've heard about his departure from Channel 8 he should be much happier.
- The new shift that I'm working entailed a week of special training, which forced me to get up at 4am every day this past week. In addition, I have to work my regular hours for the following week, which started today, meaning I'll be there for nine days straight, with no overtime.
- Drving home from work in three inches of snow that fell yesterday (for those of you reading who don't live here anymore, this was our first measurable snow of the year). That was bad enough, but the additional inch that fell overnight blocked my satellite dish reception to the point that my recording of this morning's airing of The Green Hornet didn't take, which means I'll have to wait another month for the episodes to cycle through again before I can get it. (Admittedly it could've been worse: I could've been taping Gunsmoke!)
- If I didn't hate my job before, I certainly do now. Just did my taxes for last year, and noticed that I only made about 40% of what I had the year before. And I lost out on the promotion I was going for.
- I have not been this close to totally broke in years.
- And to top it all off, sharp, sudden shooting pains on the outside of my right leg.
Anyone wanna trade lives?

Don't want the answers, just a quick memory test to see how much of last year's first major event, and which parts of it, you actually still remember. Here we go, and no cheating:- Which two teams participated in last year's Super Bowl?
- Who won?
- What was the final score?
- Which of Janet Jackson's breasts were exposed, her right or her left?
